This tour lets you explore the gems of one of the most appealing parts of the country, southern Iceland. You visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can walk behind it. Next, you need to ford the glacier rivers and rough terrains on the exciting way to the southern part of highlands – Þórsmörk Nature Reserve – where you stay overnight. The South Coast has a lot to offer. The Ring Road separates the mountainous, glacier covered dramatic inland from the coastal part including cliffs, black sand beaches and vast sandurs. The definite award awaits you at the end of the south coast. Jökulsárlón is a unique place where luminous-blue icebergs, coming from the calving glacier, float between the lagoon and the North Atlantic Ocean along with the playful seals. If you have limited time to explore Iceland, this tour is definitely for you. It takes you to some of the country’s greatest wonders in relatively short time.

Seljalandsfoss

Itinerary

Day 1 - Seljalandsfoss - Þórsmörk

After picking up your car in Reykjavík, you drive along the Ring Road up to a spectacular Seljalandsfoss waterfall. It tumbles over rocky scarp into a pool, leaving some room between the water and the wall, for the stirring walks behind the waterfall. Then you turn inland and drive on the rough gravel road until you suddenly enter a green paradise of Þórsmörk Nature Reserve. It has one of Iceland’s most dynamic and beautiful landscapes, where active volcanoes and towering glaciers rise above the lush green valleys below. Feast your eyes on the breathtaking scenery and try out one of several hiking trails. You also have a chance to see an infamous Eyjafjallajökull that paralyzed air traffic in 2010, and affected by the eruption volcanic area of Gígjökull where its glacier lagoon was greatly diminished. Overnight stay in the area.

The driving distance for this day is +- 151km.

Day 2 - Skógar - Vík - Kirkjubæjarklaustur

You begin a day by driving the F-road back to the Road 1. The South Coast and its various popular attractions are the goal of today. You pass by Seljalandsfoss, and turn to the left. You continue driving along the main road up to the point when you spot an impressive Skógafoss to the left-hand side, in a little distance from the road. You can take steep stairs up the mountain for a better view from above. Shortly before Vík you can turn up the hill to Dyrhólaey. It dramatically rises above the Vík neighbourhood revealing the beautiful overlook of the coast. After that drive back down the hill to Reynisfjara with its impressive black sandy beach backed by Reynisdrangar, basalt sea stacks emerging from the sea. You visit a little charming community of Vík. Then you continue driving to the East. Kirkjubæjarklaustur is an another tiny town. It has, however, interesting history. There is also natural pavement made out of heads of the basalt columns, easily been mistaken with a human-made structure. Overnight stay in the area.

The driving distance for this day is +- 158km.

Skógafoss
Jökulsárlón

Itinerary

Day 3 - Jökulsárlón

You can consider visiting Skaftafell on the way to your today’s destination. It is a pearl of the whole Vatnajökull National Park. You might go there on a glacier walk with mountain guides that are based on the spot or simply hit one of the trails, and e.g. to famous Svartifoss waterfall surrounded by basalt columns. After about an hour drive, you finally reach Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. A surrealistic scene of luminous-blue icebergs floating between Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and the North Atlantic Ocean through the narrow passage under the Ring Road will take your breath away. You can take a walk along the shore to be able to admire the view. Alternatively, you may take a memorable amphibious boat trip where you get really close to the icebergs as well as to the seals sailing around. Overnight stay in the area.

The driving distance for this day is +- 249km.

Day 4 - Fjaðrárgljúfur - Reykjavík

Today it is the time to head back to Reykjavík. You have many opportunities to explore more attractions on the long way to the city though. You should definitely visit Skaftafell if you have not done it yesterday. Also, Fjaðrárgljúfur is worth a little detour from the Ring Road. It is a stunning about 100-m deep canyon. Go for a walk either along the upper edge or along the Fjaðrá river on the bottom. There are the waterfalls deeper in the canyon. It is a great spot for a lunch picnic too. Enjoy the drive in the South Coast with the beautiful views around.

The driving distance for this day is +- 247km.
