Landmannalaugar

Itinerary

Day 1 - Reykjavík - Landmannalaugar - Álftavatn

The bus leaves BSÍ bus station at 8 am. The bus takes you to Landmannalaugar and passing the volcano Hekla on the way. The whole route is on marked trail and at Landmannalaugar is where the run starts. Landmannalaugar is known for it’s colorful rhyolit mountains as seen on the picture and being situated in the southern highlands of Iceland it gives you the opportunity to see some geothermally active areas, rock formations and glaciers on our way through Hrafntinnusker. There is 470 meters ascent to Hrafntinnusker but as everyone can go at their own pace on this tour it is possible to hike this part up to the plateau before the route starts descending towards Álftavatn, which is where we accommodate the first night.
Accommodation in a mountain hut at Álftavatn and dinner as well.

Distance: 24 km

Day 2 - Álftavatn - Þórsmörk

Today’s run starts with going up and down small hills from Álftavötn until getting to the desert of Mælifellssandur. The desert is flat and soft and very comfortable to run and reach a good pace towards the huge canyon of Markarfljótsgljúfur. From there it is mostly downhill for us towards the valley of Thor: Þórsmörk, which is a green oasis surrounded by three glaciers. Accommodation in a mountain hut at the Volcano Huts in Þórsmörk and dinner at their restaurant.

Distance: 33 km

Itinerary

Day 3 - Þórsmörk - Skógar - Reykjavík

Fimmvörðuháls is one of the best known single tracks in Iceland: a route that goes between the two glaciers of Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull through the lava that came from the eruption in 2010. It’s 1000 meters elevation, first ascent until you get to the craters and the new lava from 2010. This first part is also the most technical part of the route before then descending a soft trail following the Skógá river and the many waterfalls in the river along the way. The trip ends in Skógar by the Skógarfoss waterfall where you can catch the bus going to Reykjavík.

Distance: 25 km
