Explore the Highland Winter Adventure tour day-by-day
Reykjavík - Golden Circle - Kerlingarfjöll
Departure from Reykjavík is at 10am, as we start by visiting the Golden Circle - Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. From Gullfoss you’ll embark upon the first part of your highland experience, as your guide will drive you on mountain tracks to the mountain resort of Kerlingarfjöll. It will be dark by the time you’ll reach your destination, so hopefully the conditions will be good for the Northern Lights, as light pollution in the highlands is minimal.
Today will be dedicated to exploring the area of Kerlingarfjöll. Included in the tour is a guided snowshoe hiking tour, the length of which will vary depending on weather conditions of the day, but will normally include a visit to natural hot pools. At 35° Centigrades, the water is perfect for bathing, so don’t forget your swimsuit! Guests are also welcome to go on hikes around the area on their own, as long as the conditions are right.
Kerlingarfjöll - Þórsmörk
The tour also includes 30 minutes’ access to a snowmobile, and those who wish to take a longer tour, can do so for an additional cost. At 1pm we’ll leave Kerlingarfjöll, whence we’ll drive down to the South Coast, and then into the Volcano Huts highland resort in Þórsmörk, crossing a number of rivers on the way. We’ll relax after a long day by a bonfire with hot cocoa.
You’ll appreciate how different the landscape is here in Þórsmörk as you will go snowshoeing or hiking around this beautiful area nestled in between the 3 glaciers of Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull, and enjoy the stunning view from Mt. Valahnúkur.
Þórsmörk - Reykjavík
From Þórsmörk you’ll drive back down to the black sand beaches of Iceland’s South Coast, and before going back to Reykjavík you’ll visit Skógafoss, Vík and Reynisfjara, arriving to Reykjavík in the late afternoon.
