Day 1; Friday, 26.02.2010: Crossing Glacier Langjökull
Our Iceland Trophy staff will pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Reykjavik. Before the tour starts we will hold a briefing on off-road techniques and driving skills in Iceland, the car equipment as well as discussing every day of the Iceland Trophy. Your modified 4x4 self-drive vehicle is ready for you outside. We board the Defenders driving with the leading vehicle out of town north towards the highland pass Kaldidalur with a stop at National Park Thingvellir. From there we head onto Kaldidalur and towards the glacier Langjökull. Over the VHF communication the Iceland Trophy guide will prepare you with information on how we are going to cross the glacier. An unbelievable adventure starts. We cross with our super jeeps the snow covered plateau and drive down the glacier the other side where we reach the remote hut at Hveravellir. Steaming hot springs are in the vicinity and offer us a soothing bath in the geothermal, natural hot pot. Being so remote from artificial lights we have good chances of seeing Northern Lights in right conditions.
Day 2; Saturday, 27.02.2010: Highland Track Kjölur / Gullfoss & Geysir
We head down the mountain track Kjölur which is closed to normal traffic during winter. We will need quite some time to make our way out of the mountains to arrive at the sights of waterfall Gullfoss and the famous Geysir area with ever-spouting Strokkur. We stay at a farm close-by on the lookout for Northern Lights and relax in a warm hot pot telling us the stories from our adventurous day.
Day 3; Sunday, 28.02.2010: Towards the Southern Highlands
On the isolated and tough trail “Linuvegur” we cross icy rivers and pass Iceland’s second highest waterfall in Iceland –Háifoss. Towards the evening we arrive at the remote Highland Center Hrauneyjar, at the edge of the Interior, to spend there one night in readymade beds.
Day 4; Monday, 01.03.2010: Landmannalaugar
In the morning our convoy sets course to the Pearl of the Icelandic Highlands, Landmannalaugar, in the surroundings of the volcano Mt. Hekla which last erupted in the year 2000. To reach this closed off place during winter is an adventurous task. Arriving there after fighting our way through the snow we can once again have a warming welcome bath in the natural geothermal pool in the close surroundings. The mountain huts there are our shelter for tonight.
Day 5; Tuesday, 02.03.2010: Back to Reykjavik
We leave Landmannalaugar and the highlands behind and make our way through the snow down to the south coast. Here we drive onto the black sand beach with the Atlantic Ocean as our neighbor. We stop at the rustic but highly praised lobster restaurant in the old fishing village of Stokkseyri before we proceed back to our capital Reykjavik where the varied cultural nightlife is waiting.
