On adventurous trails participants use modified 4x4 self-drive vehicles (Land Rover Defender 110, bigger tires 38“, Snorkel, VHF radio intercommunication, GPS, air compressor) which were especially designed for demanding terrain. With these vehicles participants discover glaciers, desserts, lava fields but also other main attractions in Iceland, like the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlon and the Golden Circle. Tour outline:

Day 1: Golden Circle

Our Iceland Trophy staff will pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Reykjavik. Before the tour starts we will hold a briefing on off-road techniques and driving skills in Iceland, the car equipment as well as discussing every day of the Iceland Trophy. Your modified 4x4 self-drive vehicle is ready for you outside. We board the Defenders driving with the leading vehicle out of town towards the Golden Circle including the famous sights of National Park Thingvellir, the Geysir area with ever-spouting Strokkur and the majestic waterfall Gullfoss. In Sandá River we try out the utility vehicles and our gained knowledge at the briefing. Having seen these sights we leave civilization for the days to come and make our way into the interior. We pass Kerlingarfjöll huts before turning into the demanding mountain track to Setrið mountain hut where we stay overnight.

Day 2: Thorsmörk glacial valley

We take the trail leading us south again, crossing quite some rivers, and soon we leave the mountain track behind and head back to more travelled roads. We pass Sultartangi water power plant before passing Thjorsárdalur valley. Before we head into Thorsmörk glacial valley we have to follow road number one for a short while. The highland expertise of our Iceland Trophy staff guides lead you with their leading vehicle safely through the glacial rivers we have to cross on our way into the rugged but lovely valley of Thorsmörk.

Day 3: South coast

We leave Thorsmörk behind and drive with our convoy along the south coast stopping on the way for the beautiful sights of South Iceland, like Skogafoss waterfall, Sólheimajökull icefall and to the black basaltic sand shore at the ocean. We pass Vík village and the black sands of Mýrdalssandur before turning into Öldufellsleið that will lead us back into the highlands and the area of the fire gorge Eldgjá, where we stay for one night in a mountain hut.

Day 4: Langisjór and Breiðbakur

In the morning we take a short hike into the Eldgjá (a volcanic fissure from year 936) with its beautiful Ófærufoss waterfall. We proceed to the unique area of Langisjór Lake and take the rarely travelled road Breiðbakur, west of Vatnajökull glacier, with a tough crossing at the river Tungnaá. We continue to Landmannahellir on Dómadalsleið where we stay for two nights.

Day 5: Northern Fjallabaksleið

From our hut we head to Landmannalaugar, the pearl of the highlands and surrounded by colourful rhyolite mountains with both hot and cold springs emerging from the earth. The northern track behind the mountains (Fjallabaksleið nyrðri) takes us to Álftavatnskrókar and to the black wasteland of Mælifellssandur at the Northern edge of the glacier Mýrdalsjökull. From Mælifellssandur we have the possibility of a two hours hike with a dip into the geothermal pool Strútslaug. Back at our vehicles we venture to the tough Krakatindsleið back to our mountain hut for the last night in the outback.

Day 6:  Southern Fjallabaksleið - Reykjavík

In the morning our convoy sets course to Hrafntinnusker in Fjallabaksleið Syðri (the southern Fjallabak route). We proceed towards south in the surroundings of the volcano Mt. Hekla which last erupted in the year 2000, before turning into Hungurfitjaleið. We follow Fljótshlíð down to road number one that takes us back towards Reykjavik were we end our tour with a true Viking feast at the lively Viking Village restaurant.
