Tour outline:
Day 1: Beauties of Borgarfjörður
We leave the capital to discover the beauties of the Borgarfjörður area. But first we drive up and around the fjord Hvalfjörður. At its end we stop for a hike at waterfall Glymur (Iceland´s highest waterfall, hiking time 1.5 hours). From there we drive into the beautiful Borgarfjörður area and break at the village Reykholt where the Viking historian Snorri Sturluson composed some of his famous works. Thereafter we stop at the astonishing waterfall Hraunfossar. Before checking in at our friendly accommodation we head for the biggest geothermal spring in Europe – Deildartunguhver.
Accommodation: Hotel Eldborg
Day 2: Mystic Snæfellsnes
Today we’ll give the peninsula Snæfellsnes, sometimes called “Iceland in a Nutshell”, all our attention. This includes a tour to the Snæfellsnes National Park and around the glacier Snaefellsjokull, the mountain/volcano where Jules Verne’s novel “Journey to the centre of the Earth” started. We also visit and walk along the cliffy coastline by the village Arnarstapi.
Accommodation: Hotel Eldborg
Day 3: The Westfjords
In the beautifully sited fishing village Stykkisholmur our ferry is awaiting us to take us over the Breiðafjörður bay to the remote West Fjords. After a 2,5 hours cruise across the scenic bay we reach the fjord Vatnsfjörður where our cozy accommodation is located. We take a hike in the next door Nature Reserve of Vatnsfjordur. This reserve is one of the gems of the West Fjords and here we enjoy the rich bird life and flora. In the evening we’ll have the opportunity to take a soothing bath in a natural geothermal spring right at the coastline of the fjord.
Accommodation: Thverá-House
Day 4: Bird watching at Latrabjarg
We head to the most western point of Europe, the dramatic and rugged coast of Látrabjarg. This place is perfect for getting to know Icelandic birdlife. On our tour we see, depending on season, puffins that are happy to let us approach to within a few feet. Normally we also have a quite good opportunity to get a glimpse of some seals down at the light house.
Accommodation: Thverá-House
Day 5: Visit to the capital of the West Fjords
On our way to Isafjörður we pass deep, sheltered fjord landscapes. We stop at the impressive waterfall Dynjandi before continuing to the capital of the West Fjords. After enjoying the picnic lunch we explore the town Isafjörður with its lively fishing harbour, where we might buy some fresh fish at the local fish market to have it prepared at this night’s dinner. We drive the shore line along the Isafjarðardjúp to the valley Heydalur where our inviting accommodation is located.
Accommodation: Farm-Guesthouse Heydalur
Day 6: Remote wilderness
In the morning we start for the most northern glacier of Iceland called Drangajökull and the nearby lagoon Kaldalón. In this remote and hidden place we experience a terrific hiking area of Iceland. You can also stay behind at Heydalur and spend the day with optional activities like horse riding, kayaking, or even angling in mountain lakes.
Accommodation: Farm-Guesthouse Heydalur
Day 7: Back South
After an easy morning we leave the West Fjords behind to drive back down to our capital. On our way we stop at Haukadalur valley in Dalasýsla to visit the old farm house of Eiríkur Thorvaldsson (Eirik the Red) – the first settler in Greenland (optional stop). We reach Reykjavik around 17:00 hours where the varied cultural life of our capital is waiting.
