Our Methane car “Loftur“
Isafold‘s gradual growth and steady increase of all kind of tasks now demands an extra vehicle in the company, a city scooter and not a new 4x4!
According to Isafold‘s environmental policy and according to the research work Jon Baldur, the former manager of the company, has done in the field of fuel savings and the utilisation of domestic energy, we at Isafold Travel decided to buy a vehicle that runs on methane gas (CH4).

The gas is a byproduct of the household garbage deposits of Reykjavik municipality, and the gas production there could run 3000 vehicles while there only are approximately 50 in operation in Iceland today. Regarding the tradition of giving every vehicle of Isafold Travel a man‘s name that ends with „ur“ (except the trailers, having a woman name ending with an „a“), the newcomer that runs on gas got the name Loftur –„Airie“! With the gas propulsion the range of our VW Touran is limited to 200 – 250 Kms, and then are some 10 liters of petrol left for to get to the next filling station. Actually the lack of the methane-filling stations is the main disadvantage of our gas-operation, since there are only 3 in the Reykjavik area. This is like so often, the question of what comes first, the hen or the egg?
Anyhow, we at Isafold Travel definitely want to contribute to more conscious utilization of domestic energy but also to save half of the price of petrol with this cheap fuel.
